Pneumococcal pneumonia is a bacterial infection of the lungs, but this organism can also cause meningitis and septicaemia. It is present worldwide and is spread by direct contact with someone who carries the bacterium. It is a common cause of death, particularly in developing countries. The vaccine is part of the British Vaccination Schedule with children being immunised, as well as anyone in a higher risk group, which includes all over 65-year olds. Treatment of pneumonia is with antibiotics.
